Festo Pneumatic and Electric Actuators Aid Battery Production

Festo has demonstrated the ability of its products to help automate degassing and other parts of the battery production process.

The growth in electric vehicles is increasing the need for production of batteries and other necessary electronic components. As such, various manufacturing solutions and increased levels of automation are also required to help meet the growing demand for alternative energy solutions. 

Understanding this, Festo has developed several pneumatic and electric components which can aid with various aspects of battery and other component production such as conveying and precise parts handling. These products include grippers, actuators, pneumatic valves and I/O technology. 

Festo has demonstrated the capabilities of its products to aid with battery cell degassing, an important part of the overall production process for batteries. Proper degassing helps to ensure optimized battery performance during its lifespan. 

In this media gallery, you can see how various Festo products can be utilized as part of the degassing process. For instance, pneumatic cylinders are used to move the hollow lances which pierce battery cells within a degassing chamber to allow the appropriate amount of gas to be removed.

Battery production requires speed, reliability and repeatability to assure optimized performance is achieved. Implementing automation solutions like those available from Festo can help with this by providing more precise and efficient operation of repeated movements.

To ensure the safety and cleanliness of its products and those it will help produce, Festo has designed its products for use in battery manufacturing in accordance to ISO 14644-1 for dry- and cleanroom compliance. Doing so helps prevent potential contamination from environmental factors which could negatively impact battery performance. Festo's components are also copper-, zinc- and nickel-free to prevent possible interference with materials used in the battery that would otherwise cause issues.
