High-strength steel is made for hydraulic cylinders

May 24, 2013
Ovako North America Inc., Ft. Mill, S.C., offers its Ovahyd 600, 650, and 700 hydraulic steels, which were developed mainly for the manufacture of highly stressed hydraulic components, such as cylinder tubes and piston rods. The steels have impact strengths of 600, 650, and 700 MPa, respectively, and come in bars and seamless tubes. Ovahyd 600 comes in bar ODs from 24 to 160 mm and tubes from 56- to 205-mm OD with 40-mm wall thickness. The 650 and 700 grades come in bar ODs from 24 to 75 mm and tube ODs from 55 to 205 mm with 25-mm wall thickness.
Ovahyd 700’s combination of 101.5 ksi tensile strength and high impact strength at temperatures to –40° C makes it ideal for use in hydraulic cylinders and piston rods.

The 650 and 700 grades come in bar ODs from 24 to 75 mm and tube ODs from 55 to 205 mm with 25-mm wall thickness. All three grades also have high longitudinal and transverse impact strengths at temperatures down to –40°C.

The steel’s mechanical properties enable components to accommodate high stress levels, offer improved reliability in service, and the potential to design cylinders with thinner walls and reduced weight. High cleanliness combined with high strength gives Ovahyd high fatigue resistance and makes it suitable for hard chromium plating, nitro-carburizing, and nitriding. It is also suitable for all conventional arc welding methods and has good free-machining characteristics.

Ovako also offers Ovahyd 450, 540, and 590 grades of high-strength steels for hydraulic applications. These grades are made of microalloyed normalized steel and are produced according to the same principles as Ovako’s bearing steels. This ensures the steel exhibits high cleanliness and fine grain structure, giving it uniform mechanical properties and good longitudinal and transverse impact resistance at temperatures down to –20° C.
