OTC 2022: Show News and Technology Highlights

May 2, 2022
The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) will once again highlight new technologies and trends from fluid power and other manufacturers serving the energy industry.

The 2022 edition of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) will bring together energy professionals as well as manufacturers and service providers serving the industry.

Fluid power and motion control technologies of various types will be among the technology highlights at this year's event with new products from companies such as Bosch Rexroth, Parker Hannifin and more.

OTC Pavilion to Focus on Low-Carbon Technologies

A new Energy Transition Pavilion is set to be among the highlights at OTC 2022. This section of the show floor is designed to showcase technological advancements in alternative energy sources and the solutions being developed to decarbonize, drive sustainability, and improve energy efficiency states show organizers in their press release announcing the pavilion.

Sponsors of the pavilion are highlighting their expertise in this area by showing equipment, digital solutions and process improvements aimed at eliminating or reducing emissions from applications within the energy industry.

Sponsors for the 2022 pavilion are:

Presenting Sponsors

  • Deloitte
  • Nabors Industries
  • Schlumberger, Ltd.
  • Technip Energies

Tier One Sponsors

  • TechnipFMC
  • Wartsila North America

Tier Two Sponsors

  • Hiber B.V.
  • University of Houston, UH Energy

Special programming from the Presenting and Tier One sponsors will take place throughout the show, as well. This includes a moderated panel discussion, "Decarbonized: Is there space for oil & gas in a low-carbon world?" taking place May 3. It will cover the critical role decarbonization plays in the energy transition and highlight the technological advancements, both in development and execution, that are reducing emissions and improving the efficiency of oil and gas production and operations says show organizers.

Bosch Rexroth Showcasing Variety of Tech for Marine and Offshore

During OTC, Bosch Rexroth and its Hägglunds brand are displaying a range of products including motors and drive systems, electromechanical and electrohydraulic actuators and more.

The company says a highlight at this year's booth is its Subsea Valve Actuator (SVA R2). Winner of a 2022 Spotlight on New Technology Award, the SVA R2 is an electric actuator designed to replace hydraulic cylinders used in the subsea process industry. It can operate at depths up to 4,000 m and can be used in various process applications including:

  • offshore energy for production in green and brown oil & gas fields
  • carbon capture and storage
  • green hydrogen production.

At OTC, Bosch Rexroth is demoing a process valve connected to a digital twin that can simulate any subsea process automation application.

Additional highlights the company states in its pre-show press release attendees can look forward to seeing at OTC include the following:

  • Axial Piston Pump with Electrohydraulic Control: Rexroth will showcase a variety of aftermarket services and products that maximize equipment availability, including a demo of the Rexroth Axial Piston Pump with electrohydraulic control. The pump is a digital control electronics module with functionality that includes swivel angle and pressure and torque limitation.
  • Hägglunds Rineer, Atom and CB: Interactive demos will include the Hägglunds CB motor, the Atom hydraulic motor and the Rineer motor to illustrate robust solutions with extreme power-to-weight ratios and full range of torque at the installed power. Rineer vane motors provide high torque at start and stall and flat torque throughout the entire speed range. The “vane-crossing-vane” design provides optimum power-to-weight ratio, smooth output over a wide speed range and maximum torque at zero rpm. The Hägglunds Atom comes bundled in an extremely compact design that withstands harsh environments and mounts right on the shaft. Fully marine adapted, the atom is a powerhouse in miniature, unleashing a maximum torque of 13.6 kNm at speeds of up to 400 rpm, ideally suited for marine equipment such as winches, thrusters, dredgers and subsea mining. Tough and rugged with a wide range of sizes and displacements, Hägglunds' CB motor gives high flexibility and quick response in heavy-duty marine applications.
  • Electrification Solutions: eLion is the new high-voltage product line that consists of more than 80 scalable motor variants, three matching inverters, gear units, a modular power distribution unit, onboard charger, DC/DC converter (12V/24V) and cabling (HV+LV). On display will be one example of the three different power classes featuring Bosch Rexroth's new power electronics, the EDS1-L0400. eLION applications include generator drives, motor-gear-unit combinations for different drivetrain topologies, motor-pump(s) combinations (eLION Sytronix) for different implement and auxiliary topologies, winches, and other accessory requirements.
  • Industrial Manifolds: Rexroth will showcase a fully assembled and tested manifold with a high quality of functionality and reliability for all industrial applications, from marine applications to oil industries.
  • Active Heave Compensation: This technology enables greater heave control for winch and crane systems for floating vessels. Rexroth will demonstrate its modularity and show how to retrofit existing systems and new builds.

Dutch Filtration Develops High Flow Filter Press with Semi-Automatic Plate Shifter

Dutch Filtration, a company which designs various filtration equipment for the oilfield and process industry, has developed a High Flow Filter Press equipped with a semi-automatic plate shifter. Use of a semi-automatic pneumatic plate shifter allows easy movement of heavy plates in a more compact package than fully automated systems the company says.

The pneumatic plate shifter can move plates weighing over 150 kg (330 lbs.) when full. Additional features include:

  • Frame designed according to, and certified to DNV 2.7-1
  • Pneumatic powered hydraulic system and plate shifting system
  • All wetted parts SS316
  • Connections unions fig. 206
  • Stainless steel control cabinet

Parker Highlights Degradable Material for Downhole Completions

Parker Hannifin's O-Ring & Engineered Seals Division is exhibiting its degradable solutions for oil and gas operations, including its ZP203-80 and the ZP204 degradable elastomer compounds. These compounds are designed to eliminate the need for coiled tubing intervention, or drill out, when used as a sealing element in oil and gas completions says Parker Hannifin in its press release discussing its presence at OTC.

"As competition increases in the global energy market, producers seek technologies that will reduce costs and improve well efficiencies," says Dana Severson, regional sales manager - oil & gas, Engineered Materials Group, Parker Hannifin, in the company's press release. "Degradable elastomers replace the traditional composite products used in completion operations and can be customized to the application."

Parker says the ZP203 and ZP204 compounds are formulated to offer the tough physical properties that are required for sealing pressures up to 10,000 psi during hydraulic fracturing operations. When hydraulic frac is complete, the unique compound degradation is activated by the water-based frac fluids to allow breakdown into flowable, non-clogging particulates, providing multiple benefits to the end user.

The ZP203 and ZP204 compounds offer several other features as well:

  • 80 and 90 Shore A Hardness
  • Ideal Temperature Range of 130-180 F
  • Elastomeric Resilience
  • Water Activated Degradation
  • Tolerant of a Wide Range of Salinities
  • Reduces to Non-Clogging Particulates
  • Available in Packing Elements, O-Rings, Custom Shapes, and Bonded Profile Seals
