Webasto has increased the energy content of its traction batteries to 40 kilowatt hours (kWh) with the introduction of its Standard Battery Pro 40.
Key features of the battery include:
- up to 18 batteries can be used to power commercial vehicles
- vertical or horizontal integration
- fits into same installation space as previous models
- meets all necessary industry standards such as CE specifications for mobile machinery.
More Battery Power in a Similar Package Design
Webasto chose to increase the energy content of its traction batteries from 35 to 40 kWh to help customers ensure they have the power necessary for their vehicle designs now and in the future. Higher power levels are being demanded as more applications move to electrification, bringing about the need for battery technology capable of meeting these requirements.
The Standard Battery Pro 40 allows up to 18 batteries to be used together, providing a total energy content of 720 kWh which is sufficient for powering 400 or 800V electric commercial vehicles.
"The electrification of commercial vehicles and machines is progressing at an ever-increasing pace, which also increases the demands on traction batteries. With the Webasto Standard Battery Pro 40, we now offer our customers an even higher energy content in a robust battery pack to provide sufficient reserves for an entire working day," said Dr. Lena Beckmann, Director Batteries and Electrical Thermal Management at Webasto. "With the update of our standard battery system and our extensive portfolio of electrical thermal management solutions, we offer system integrators and vehicle manufacturers a strong foundation to put the mobility transition in the commercial sector on a sustainable footing."

To ease the design process for customers, the battery shares many characteristics with Webasto's previous standard battery systems. The Standard Battery Pro features the same aluminum housing to ensure durability and allows vertical or horizontal installation.
It has the same dimensions as previous models as well, fitting into a space measuring 37.8 x 27.1 x 11.9 in. (960 x 687 x 302 mm) and weighs 654.8 lbs. (297 kg). By requiring the same space claim as previous versions, customers do not need to change their vehicle design to accommodate the newer battery model, saving on development time and costs.
Webasto also ensured when developing the Standard Battery Pro 40 that it would work with the company's eBTM thermal management system designed to keep traction batteries within their ideal operating temperature range. As the company explained, the eBTM uses a series of sensors to continuously monitor the temperature of the battery so that the protective mechanisms, including various fuses, take immediate effect in the event of a malfunction.
Built-In Safety for Various Electric Vehicle Applications
According to Webasto, the Standard Battery Pro 40 meets the highest requirements for safety, availability and stability.
To ensure this, the battery system meets all necessary standards for the various electrification applications it may be utilized in. It has received ECE R100 and R10 approvals, required when used in on-road vehicles in Europe, as well as CE specifications for selected mobile machinery.
In addition, the battery meets a range of safety standard such as ISO 6469, ISO 19014 and ISO 26262 (ASIL level C).
The battery includes IP67 certification as well, ensuring it is protected against the ingress of dust and water which is important in for use in a range of heavy-duty applications.
