In a 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down the tariffs put in place by the Trump Administration. The court ruled that the President exceeded his authority and taxes such as tariffs require the authorization of Congress.
Since February 2025, tariffs have been placed on a wide range of goods coming into the U.S. from various trading partners. However, the speed at which they were put into place and the continually changing nature of them caused a lot of uncertainty for businesses — including those in the fluid power industry and its customer markets.
Members of the hydraulics and pneumatics industry Power & Motion spoke to when tariffs were first put in place in 2025 noted the challenges they would likely face in terms of determining pricing and higher business costs due to the tariffs.
A February 12, 2026 report from Federal Reserve Bank of New York Liberty Street Economics shows about 90% of the economic burden from tariffs have fallen on U.S. businesses and consumers.
Market conditions were expected to improve in 2025 for the fluid power industry and many of its customer markets. While some sectors saw positive momentum during the year, many like the agricultural equipment and other heavy-duty mobile machinery markets, continued to see muted demand. High interest rates and other economic factors were already presenting challenges and tariffs added more costs and uncertainty for many which kept them from investing in new equipment.
It remains to be seen what the eventual impacts of this SCOTUS ruling will be, but Power & Motion will continue to provide relevant updates as they become available.
