H&P Insights: The Approval of Seals; Further Thoughts on Seals, Product Blitz Delivers Innovation

May 21, 2021
A review of the day’s top trending stories from Hydraulics & Pneumatics editors.

The Approval of Seals

As with so many components, the cost of sealing solutions often gets measured by price per piece. While this is a consideration, engineers also must look at the operating cost of the seal, as a new Hydraulics & Pneumatics article notes.

Companies should not choose an expansion plug based solely on the per piece price as that is not the overall cost of using an expansion plug,” writes article author Brian Krieger of Engineered Inserts & Systems Inc. “It is often advisable to consult with a sealing expert, such as a supplier or a company that makes expansion plugs, and let them assess the overall cost.”

Further Thoughts on Seals

As noted, cost is just one factor in seals. Another is preventing contamination, as a recent Hydraulics & Pneumatics article pointed out.

“Contamination is estimated by hydraulic experts to cause 65% to 90% of all hydraulic system failures, making it a major cause for concern for fluid power engineers,” wrote article authors Beth Figliulo and Michael Cook of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. “And although filters have improved, oil can still become contaminated and cut short the life of hydraulic equipment.”
