Hydraulic fluid—whether conventional, synthetic, or environmentally friendly—can be a significant segment of annual operating budgets. Even if leakage is held at bay, contaminants, water ingression, and oxidation can shorten the life of hydraulic fluid, making it necessary to replace sometimes hundreds of gallons of expensive fluid per year.

On that front, Eaton’s Filtration Div., Tinton Falls, N. J. recently introduced the IFPM 72 Fluid Purifier System, a hydraulic-fluid conditioner that can extend the life of hydraulic fluid in multiple hydraulic systems within a plant. Like a filter cart, the IFPM 72 can be moved from one machine to another. What’s different, though, is that the unit uses vacuum evaporation to remove contaminants, including water.

An operator is shown adjusting and monitoring the operation of Eaton’s IFPM 72 portable fluid-purification system, which uses vacuum evaporation to remove water, particulate contamination, and dissolved gasses from hydraulic fluid.

The IFPM72 draws in contaminated fluid from the hydraulic reservoir and heats the fluid to increase filtration speed. The cleaned fluid is then drawn out through a high-efficiency particulate-removal filter and routed back to the system, where a water sensor continuously monitors fluid saturation. The process combines high water separation rates with efficient energy usage for a variety of applications.

The fully automated, mobile IFPM 72 system removes water, particulate contamination, and dissolved gases from hydraulic and lubricating-oil systems to increase reliability, life, and efficiency of systems. Features include a user-friendly touch display, automatic shutdown, and continuous measurement of fluid temperature, water saturation and filter flow-through rates.

Mary Jo Surges, vice president and general manager of Eaton’s Filtration Div, explained, “The enhancements to Eaton’s IFPM 72 system will help [users] meet increasingly challenging needs in ever-changing conditions more safely, efficiently, and with better return on investment. Ultimately, it creates a mutually beneficial situation for everyone.”
