A Deep Dive into Cavitation
Hydraulics & Pneumatics contributor Peter Nachtwey, president of Delta Computer Systems Inc., has offered his insights on a wide variety of system solutions. His work on cylinder cavitation is certainly worth a second look.
“Cavitation normally occurs on the cap side of the piston when it is extending quickly and attempting to stop an over-running load,” Nachtwey notes. “Cavitation can also occur when the rod is pointing down with a heavy tensile load on the end—a common situation in presses. The problem is how to determine if the hydraulic cylinder, load, and motion profile will cause cavitation.”
The answer to that question is calculated step-by-step in Nachtwey’s outstanding article.
Data Sheet Search Available
A new feature of Hydraulics & Pneumatics’ recently-refreshed home page is the searchable parts database offered in conjunction with our partner, Source ESB. The database offers easy access to thousands of component distributors, manufacturers and service providers. Think of it as a one-stop shopping center for components. Search by distributor name and get not just part information, but also price, availability and the ability to purchase the parts right from the database.
