Robots are being used for a variety of tasks. Our top story in today’s newsletter offers a look at a more unique use case I’ve come across for them, elevator installation.
Developed by elevator manufacturer Schindler, the Robotic Installation System for Elevators — known as the Schindler R.I.S.E — is not intended to reduce manpower, “but to remove the repetitive, very labor-intensive, dusty and noisy work from people, and giving it to a machine,” Faruk Osmanbasic, lead advanced installation technologies at Schindler, explained to me during our interview.
Through the use of sensors, software algorithms and even some pneumatics, the robot is able to autonomously install the guide rails critical to the operation of any elevator system. This can often be a weeks-long project with a lot of dust, noise and physical labor required. But by having the Schindler R.I.S.E perform it instead, worker safety can be improved and they can instead focus their attention where their expertise is most needed, such as ensuring precision alignment and elevator ride quality.
