Use of biodegradable lubricants is not new, but interest in them continues to grow as machine owners look to reduce their impact on the environment. Our top story in today’s newsletter examines the development of a new generation of bioderived overbased calcium sulphonate greases which aims to overcome some of the challenges associated with previous iterations, notably their ability to meet biodegradability thresholds established by government organizations.
By producing the grease's thickener entirely in an ester-based carrier oil and eliminating mineral oil from the formulation, the bioderived grease is able to meet biodegradability standards as well as reduce emissions associated with its production.
